We Are Who We Are

Screen Shot 2020-10-02 at 9.48.39 AM.png

A reading list inspired by Luca Guadagnino’s HBO series “We Are Who We Are” set on a military base in Italy.

Luca Guadagnino received widespread critical acclaim and several accolades, including nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture, Nastro d'Argento for Best Director, and BAFTA Award for Best Direction, directing and producing Call Me by Your Name (2017) starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer (who narrates the audiobook linked below).

In this spellbinding exploration of the varieties of love, the author of the worldwide bestseller Call Me by Your Name revisits its complex and beguiling characters decades after their first meeting. Aciman is a master of sensibility, of the intimate details and the emotional nuances that are the substance of passion. Find Me brings us back inside the magic circle of one of our greatest contemporary romances to ask if, in fact, true love ever dies.

“Given that Walt Whitman has played a key role so far in We Are Who We Are, it shouldn’t be surprising that this third episode opens with a lovely discussion about the value of poetry between our two teen protagonists. What spurs it may be Fraser’s copy of Ocean Vuong’s Night Sky With Exit Wounds (“In the body, where everything has a price, / I was a beggar,” he reads aloud), but it quickly becomes a chance for Fraser — and the show — to put forth a thesis we’ve already been seeing play out. In contrast to Caitlin’s fast fashion and junk-food choices, Fraser talks about how he’s “looking for stuff that means something.” He loves the intentionality of poetry, where every word is painstakingly chosen and demands that you afford it the importance it deserves.” Manuel Betancourt, Vulture

Michiko Kakutani in The New York Times writes: "The poems in Mr. Vuong's new collection, Night Sky With Exit Wounds...possess a tensile precision reminiscent of Emily Dickinson's work, combined with a Gerard Manley Hopkins-like appreciation for the sound and rhythms of words. Mr. Vuong can create startling images (a black piano in a field, a wedding-cake couple preserved under glass, a shepherd stepping out of a Caravaggio painting) and make the silences and elisions in his verse speak as potently as his words...There is a powerful emotional undertow to these poems that springs from Mr. Vuong's sincerity and candor, and from his ability to capture specific moments in time with both photographic clarity and a sense of the evanescence of all earthly things."

Jonathan and Fraser discuss Ocean Vuong’s first novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, a heartbreakingly beautiful letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Keep your tissues handy for this book or the audiobook read by the author linked below.

New Books Out September 8th

Happy New Release Tuesday! Check out the excellent books released this week below. My full list of fall 2020 recommendations available for home delivery can be found on my Bookshop.org page here.

From the chef behind Momofuku and star of Netflix's Ugly Delicious--an intimate account of the making of a chef, the story of the modern restaurant world that he helped shape, and how he discovered that success can be much harder to understand than failure.

"David puts words to so many of the things we all feel, sharing generously of his own journey so we can all benefit in the process."--Chrissy Teigen

Self-described "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet" Audre Lorde is an unforgettable voice in twentieth-century literature, and one of the first to center the experiences of black, queer women. This essential reader showcases her indelible contributions to intersectional feminism, queer theory, and critical race studies in twelve landmark essays and more than sixty poems--selected and introduced by one of our most powerful contemporary voices on race and gender, Roxane Gay.

Set in the American Midwest, England, and India (Mumbai, Ahmedabad, rural Gujarat) the stories in EACH OF US KILLERS are about people trying to realize their dreams and aspirations through their professions. Whether they are chasing money, power, recognition, love, or simply trying to make a decent living, their hunger is as intense as any grand love affair. Straddling the fault lines of class, caste, gender, nationality, globalization, and more, they go against sociocultural norms despite challenges and indignities until singular moments of quiet devastation turn the worlds of these characters--auto-wallah, housemaid, street vendor, journalist, architect, baker, engineer, saree shop employee, professor, yoga instructor, bartender, and more--upside down.

"Jenny Bhatt's gorgeous stories in EACH OF US KILLERS remind me why I love to read a good book. It is such a pleasure to be immersed in the worlds of her characters, in their hunger for love or money, and in their local and global struggles to live. With mouth-watering detail, Bhatt serves up a rich and varied feast."--Devi S. Laskar

Award-winning author Amy Novesky and Governor General's Award-winning illustrator Julie Morstad have teamed up for a spectacular celebration of girl power and resilience.

A hands-on manual and a history and celebration of clothes tending--and its remarkable resurgence as art form, political statement, and path to healing the planet.

In this book Kate Sekules introduces the art of visible mending as part of an important movement to give fashion back its soul. Part manifesto, part how-to, MEND! calls for bold new ways of keeping clothes and refreshing your style. In Jamie Marina Lau's debut novel, shortlisted for Australia's prestigious Stella Prize when she was nineteen years old, hazily surreal vignettes conjure a multifaceted world of philosophical angst and lackadaisical violence.

A new focus on the sublime landscapes in Lisa Yuskavage's voluptuous figure paintings

Though she is arguably best known for the voluptuous female nudes that populate her paintings, Lisa Yuskavage's work is just as focused on the ethereal settings in which these subjects appear. Yuskavage creates finely detailed landscapes that blur the line between the fantastical and the familiar, melding abstraction with realism to depict self-contained worlds. These outdoor scenes defy conventions of landscape painting with surreal color palettes of lush greens and delicate pinks, cast in a gauzy light quality that highlights the almost magical nature of her paintings.

Published in conjunction with a joint exhibition between the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado and the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland, this volume includes color reproductions of Yuskavage's paintings and watercolors from the early 1990s to the present, as well as an interview between Yuskavage and fellow artist Mary Weatherford

"Marie NDiaye is one of my favorite living writers and That Time of Year is yet another shape-shifting masterpiece. Here the disappearance of the protagonist's family is not a mystery to be solved, but rather one that gradually opens a portal into social and psychological terror. NDiaye is a virtuoso of the haunted, the alienated, the submerged, the powerfully strange--and this new novel is as thrilling as it is profound." -Laura van den Berg, author of I Hold a Wolf by the Ears and The Third Hotel

"Marie NDiaye is so intelligent, so composed, so good, that any description of her work feels like an understatement." --The New York Review of Books

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and "writer of astonishing depth" (The Washington Times) comes a poignant, charming novel about a crime that never took place, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, and eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined.

Back to School

Here is a back-to-school themed storytime featuring All the Ways to Be Smart by Davina Bell and illustrated by Allison Colpoys. This book celebrates all the different kinds of intelligence we possess. It's a good reminder as we start a school year full of unique challenges to each child, that they are also coming to it with unique gifts. I stumble a bit in this video, but thought I'd keep the mistakes in since I think we all know we're all just trying our best right now.

In the background you can see another great back-to school book called The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael López which talks about having the courage to connect with others when you feel different from the group you are joining. Links in the comments to learn more about or purchase these great books.

Wishing you all the best of luck with all the new adventures we are undertaking this school year!

ADVANCE PRAISE

“A major achievement. Having and Being Had, rather than leading through narrative, turns individual words and phrases, like capitalismconsumersgreat Americahusbandryart, and work, into fields of inquiry in order to frame a life. With astute consideration, this expansive and intimate accumulation asks the questions that touch all our lives.” —Claudia Rankine

“In this witty, genre-bending book, Eula Biss smashes the taboo against talking about money with exhilarating results. Her investigation ranges from the strictly financial to the broadly philosophical as she accounts for her life with disarming honesty and grace.”  —Jenny Offill

“Eula Biss’s prescient new book gave me new language for things I didn’t know I felt about money, capitalism, and my place inside of an economy that always requires so much of me and gives back so little. A brilliant, lacerating re-examination of our relationship to what we own and why, and who in turn might own us in ways we didn’t know we consented to—what could be more necessary now?” —Alexander Chee

Antiracism Storytime

I'm so happy to share two amazing books for kids in an Antiracism Storytime hosted by HudCo, a beautiful co-working space in Dobbs Ferry.

Antiracist Baby by Ibram X. Kendi and illustrated by Ashley Lukashevsky

Intersectionallies by Latoya Council, Carolyn Choi, & Chelsea Johnson, illustrated by @seilsmith .

These books provide parents useful tools and vocabulary for talking about current events, and raising good citizens. Thoughtful yet playful text and vibrant illustrations will keep it an engaging experience for all ages. I hope that these books inspire us to have brave talks with our kids and to have faith that all the work we are doing now around the country is going to make the world a more just place for all.

As I mention in the video, these books are available through Picture Book’s ecommerce site Bookshop.org, but I also suggest you consider buying them from an independent black-owned bookstore.

Books to Support Antiracism

From the conception of Picture Book, it has been a core value to ensure that I am promoting books by and with representation of people of color. I think it is incredibly important for us all to engage with stories about people of color that don’t have to do with race to remind us all that race isn’t the only story to a person’s life. However, it has become increasingly clear that is not enough at all, and we also need books that deal directly with racism to fight it. As a white woman, I am trying to do the work specifically with Layla F. Saad’s Me and White Supremacy and Ibram X Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist. You can find my full list of recommendations for printed books on antiracism for all ages here and a full list of audiobooks on antiracism here and several highlighted below. Many books are currently backordered, so if you are feeling the urgency of the moment I strongly recommend you get your audiobooks with the libro.fm platform.
