Party Pics! Celebrating with Jenny Rosenstrach
I was so thrilled to get to be the bookstore partner for the launch of The Weekday Vegetarians by Jenny Rosenstrach at HudCo. It is a fabulous cookbook that helps us to enjoy eating in a way that’s better for the planet, made by a truly wonderful, kind person so it is a complete joy to promote it. There is no better space around than HudCo to celebrate and it was especially perfect given that Jenny was one of the founding members and she wrote a lot of the book here. It was a night to remember with food by Hooked & Hungry, cookies by Bake, cocktails by Spare Food Co., swag bag goodies by Tatcha and Rancho Gordo Beans. Couldn’t have done it without the amazing team behind HudCo including Shannon who pulled it all together, and her amazing sisters (all the flowers are by Sam’s Flower Barr!). Thank you @larufoto for capturing the night so well!

About this event
She's been researching, testing, and writing about this venture into vegetarian cooking for the past few years, and we've been frantically devouring the crumbs she's shared in her new Substack newsletter. Now the big day has finally arrived—The Weekday Vegetarians has been released (August 31), and we're eager to celebrate!
Our friend and long-time HudCo member Jenny Rosenstrach, creator of the beloved blog Dinner: A Love Story and Cup of Jo columnist, knew that she wanted to eat better for her health and for the planet but didn’t want to miss the meat that she loves. But why does it have to be all or nothing? She figured that she could eat vegetarian during the week and save meaty splurges for the weekend. The Weekday Vegetarians shows readers how Jenny got her family on board with a weekday plant-based mentality and lays out a plan for home cooks to follow, one filled with brilliant and bold meat-free meals.
Join us to not only get your very own signed copy of The Weekday Vegetarians, but to also hear a short talk from the author herself, ask her some questions, and walk away with some free goodies courtesy of the Rivertowns independent bookstore Picture Book.

Beach Read Pop Up at Lola NY
I picked out some fun, page-turners to for a Picture Book pop-up inside the beautiful Lola New York boutiques in White Plains and Crestwood/Tuckahoe. Lola is open Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm.
Lola has the best breezy dresses and summer bags, so now you can stock up on these great beach reads to complete your summer getaway! I picked out some fun, page-turners like Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid the New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six. It's a story about four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer in Malibu in 1983, but over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives change forever. What Comes After by Joanne Tompkins is a propulsive mystery, but also a moving account of strangers and friends in a small town in coastal Washington uniting to help one another after great tragedy. Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam, is a suspenseful story of two families stuck together in a Long Island vacation house, with imagery that will stick with you. Now in paperback, New York Times notable book Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin is a smart, socially conscious, thriller set in a resort on a Caribbean island. New York Times bestseller Friends and Strangers by J. Courtney Sullivan is a great read about modern motherhood and female friendship. And if you still haven't read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, it's time to pick up a copy in paperback now! Leave the World Behind is an eerie suspenseful book about what happens when two families are stuck in a vacation home together during an uncertain disaster. You won’t be able to put it down! If you can’t make it to Lola to get these books in person, you can buy them online here on my Bookshop page with nationwide shipping.

Mother's Day Gift Guide
We’ve all had quite a year, and a lot of the hardships of the pandemic have particularly landed on mothers, so there is every reason to give them all the love and attention and presents we can shower them with this Mother’s Day. Here are a few recommendations for treating the moms in your life.
FOR THE BRAND NEW MOM
Probably not the time to get her a long involved novel. This mom needs sleep, appreciation, and good maternity leave policies. Give her something sentimental that works with her attention span. A Mother Is a House is a sweet picture book that celebrates all that a mom is to their baby. A mother is a nest, a mirror, a moon. The baby sees their mother in every aspect of their day. As the pages go by, the child grows. The mother who was a refuge becomes a road, a story, and a show. Mothers Before: Stories and Portraits of Our Mothers as We Never Saw Them is a collection of short essays and photographs by top writers, poets, & artists meditating on the mystery of who our mothers were as individuals before they became our moms. This is a perfect collection for the mom contemplating the identity transitions of new motherhood.
FOR THE MOM WHO IS A GRANDMA
Give the gift of time with their grandkids with these special grandmother themed picture books she can read to them! Maud & Grand-Maud celebrates a special sleepover at Grandmas house complete with matching PJs. Encyclopedia of Grannies is a whimsical & hilarious book for a Grannie with a big sense of humor.
FOR THE MOM WHO NEEDS A VACATION
We all need this. Give your travel-bug mom a mental vacation with these cookbooks that double as travel books. Bonus points if you also cook her something from it.
FOR THE LITERARY MOM
Does your mom know that Jhumpa Lahiri finally has a new novel out after we’ve been waiting for nearly a decade? Does she need to complete her Rachel Cusk shelf with the latest release? Get her these books ASAP!
FOR THE MOM (OR ANYONE) WHO MISSES HER MOM
This is a tender time of year for anyone already mourning the loss of a mom. If they are ready for a cathartic cry, Crying in H Mart is Michelle Zauner’s beautiful ode to her mother. Many Shapes of Clay: A Healing Story is a picture book about grief and how the creative process can guide us in healing. Mother’s Before helps explore the mystery of who our moms were as people before they became ours.
FOR THE CANNABIS MOM
New York became the 15th state to legalize recreational marijuana this Spring, so it’s time for the cannabis moms and the canna-curious to delve deeper into their hobby. These fun books show the way as well as Picture Book’s complete reading list of new ideas on cannabis on Bookshop_org. Also check out the Via Viaggio CBD products for sale in the kitchen at HudCo!
FOR THE MOM WHO IS THRILLED IT IS FINALLY GARDENING SEASON
For the moms who love the gardening life (get them the Piet Oudolf book!) to those who have better luck keeping the flowers inside a book alive
FOR THE MOM WHO WANTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD
For the moms who want to stay informed to keep up the good fight
FOR THE MOM WHO MISSES MUSEUMS
These gorgeous exhibition catalogues can take her there from the comfort of home!
FOR THE MOM WHO LOVES STORY TIME
FOR THE QUIRKY MOM
FOR THE MOM WHO APPRECIATES BEAUTY
FOR YOUR FRIEND THAT IS NOT A MOM
Let’s hold space for all the women who do not have kids either through joyful choice, or difficult circumstances. They deserve books too! Here are some good ones.

You Are Not Too Old for Picture Books
This article from Pamela Paul, the co-author of How to Raise a Reader an indispensable guide to welcoming children to a lifelong love of reading, may as well be my store's manifesto. Though your children may be able to read chapter books already, there is still a richness of reading pleasure and depth available for them in picture books. Adults can also find much for them in picture books, even as those "picture books" morph into art books for the coffee table, or cookbooks with gorgeous photographs.
"First, appreciate what picture books, the real wizards of the literary world, do. With remarkable economy, they excel at the twin arts of visual and textual storytelling. Anyone who has ever read a picture book to a child has witnessed this magic firsthand. You’ll be reading along aloud and the child will laugh, not at anything you’ve read but at something she has read in the pictures. While you are reading one story, told in words, she is reading another, told through art. The illustrator doesn’t merely reflect the words on the page; she creates an entire narrative of her own, adding details, creating secondary story lines.
Think of that mouse making its way around the bedroom in “Goodnight Moon” or the buildings constructed out of household goods inside the dreamscape of “In the Night Kitchen.” These elements tell another story, and even kids who haven’t mastered the alphabet can read them, gleaning from the sequence of images how one event leads to another, discovering subplots within. This is why kids tell you not to turn the page yet, or to go back; it’s why they ask for the story to be read over and over again. They learn that you have to look closely to ferret out clues and derive meaning. They are also learning to read deeply."
...
"I still read picture books, and if you’re honest with yourself, in all likelihood, so do you. What are all those manga and graphic novels and pricey coffee-table books and online comics we’re all staring at — not to mention Instagram stories and TikTok videos — if not, in essence, picture books for grown-ups? Stories with pictures."
Don't miss Pamela Paul 's debut picture book, Rectangle Time with illustrations by Becky Cameron. Signed copies available!
